Taos in August

Count your lucky stars, New Mexico. Elsewhere the climate is rocketing into the stratosphere with humidity that feels like tropical levels. In order to stay fresh this August, your Historic Taos Inn is putting together the following guide to fresh musical acts and words of wisdom. These venues are close by and getting there will require only a minimum of an excursion. Snap on that baseball cap and clutch your belongings because luxurious indoor temperatures are within reach.

If poetry is music to your ears then hear Sara Berkeley Tolchin, Pushcart Prize nominee and a finalist for the Irish Times Poetry Now award, read from her new collection of poetry on August 5th, 7 o’clock. The reading will take place at SOMOS (or, the Society of the Muse of the Southwest), a cultural organization founded in Taos in 1983. In the next morning when you’ve recovered from this verbal workout, scholar Charles King will lecture on Pueblo pottery in the Harwood Museum of Art’s Arthur Bell Auditorium. This is an excellent opportunity to gain insights into the rich cultural heritage found in Taos.

That evening it’s time to embrace the true meaning of southern heat. Cruise over to Kit Carson Park for a 7:30 performance by 3-time Grammy winning band Alabama Shakes. On August 12th at 5:30 the Arthur Bell Auditorium will showcase dramatic scenes from an opera-in-progress with live sopranos and tenors. Finally, for those of you planning to arrive later in the month, the Angel Fire Community Centers celebrates the opening night (August 19th) of its summer music series with a recital of chamber music beginning at 7 o’clock. We hope this guide helps steer you and your family to an audibly good time.
