Independence Day the New Mexico Way

Taos is certainly the all around coolest spot in New Mexico, but for the hottest Independence Day daytime festivities, you’ll want to take a fifteen minute drive north to Arroyo Seco, where the noontime parade brings the usually sleepy little village roaring to life.

You’ll see elaborate, multi-colored floats, imbibe food and drink to your belly’s content, and soak up an energy that seems to radiate from every direction. Get there early too—it’s going to be packed. After the parade, head back down to Taos (perhaps for an afternoon nap in your luxurious accommodations) and get ready for the fireworks show, sponsored by the Taos Volunteer Fire Department. This dazzling display will go up around 9:30 over the Filemón Sánchez Park off Salazar Road. Bring a blanket, kick off your shoes, and wish America a happy birthday with an hour of heavenly lights bursting above.
