The Ultimate in Eco-Friendly Living

Here in the Southwest, we draw endless inspiration from the wide open spaces and the frontier spirit passed down through generations.

In keeping with that ethos, we’re fascinated by architect Michael Reynolds’s one-of-a-kind Earthship Biotecture project, a community of over seventy “Earthships” just a short drive from our Taos hotel. An Earthship is “the epitome of sustainable design and construction. No part of sustainable living has been ignored in this ingenious building.” Each Earthship is constructed in accordance with six design principles: building with local, natural materials; maintaining a comfortable temperature in any climate; producing its own electricity; containing and reusing all household sewage; harvesting water from the sky; and growing its own food. You’re welcome to tour this community of eco-conscious living every day during the summer from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. We think you’ll be surprised by how attractive the buildings are, though we’re also sure you’ll agree that nothing quite matches the charm and appeal of the historic Taos Inn.
